What Are Pi Security Circles and the Security Circle Mining Reward?

Security Circlesare small groups of trusted Pioneers that you personally select within the Pi Network app. Think of it as a way of telling the network:

"These are the people I know and trust in real life."

Each Pioneer can build their own Security Circle, and here’s why it matters:

For every trusted Pioneer you add (and who mines actively), you earn a 20% bonus on your mining rate.

You can add up to 5 members, meaning you can boost your mining rate by up to 100% through Security Circle rewards alone.

These bonuses stack on top of other mining boosts (like referrals, lockups, and app engagement).

So building your Security Circle = mining faster.

💡 Why Are Security Circles So Important?

Security Circles don’t just boost mining. They play a critical role in protecting the Pi blockchain.

Here’s how:

Pi’s blockchain uses a unique trust-based consensus algorithm.

Instead of relying only on machines, it also relies on the trust relationships between real people.

The connections formed by Security Circles create what’s called a “trust graph” - a map of who trusts who on the network.

This trust graph helps the Pi Nodes validate transactions securely preventing fake accounts or fraudulent activity.

So every time you add someone you trust, you're not just mining more Pi — you're also helping secure the network.

👤 What Is a Pi Contributor, and How Do I Become One?

A Contributor is a Pioneer who takes the extra step of building a Security Circle.

To become one:

1. Mine Pi for at least 3 days (3 mining sessions)

2. After that, a new icon will appear on your app’s home screen

3. Tap the icon to begin adding trusted Pioneers to your Security Circle

You can only add people who are:

Already KYC’ed or active Pioneers

Personally known and trusted by you

Once you start building your Security Circle, your role as "Contributor” will be activated in the app.

🌐 Reminder: The Four Roles in Pi

In the Pi ecosystem, every Pioneer can take on different roles:

Pioneer – mines daily and participates in the community

Contributor – builds the trust graph by adding a Security Circle

Ambassador – invites others to the network

Node – runs Pi blockchain software on a computer to secure the network

To see which roles you have:

 Open the Pi app

 Tap the ≡ menu (top-left)

Tap "Roles"

Want help explaining the Node role or how Referral Teams work next? Just ask.
